Deep indigo twilight settles over the stone steps of a Harbin courthouse, where a speaker stands framed by harsh floodlights. The cold air hangs still on a clear winter night, illuminating the speaker's raised arms and the cluster of microphones held aloft. Strong rim light cuts through the darkness, outlining the figure against the shadowed architecture while casting long, sharp shadows across the icy ground. Snow dusts the shoulders of the surrounding crowd, their faces turned upward in the blue glow. The rough texture of the granite steps contrasts with the smooth metal of the microphone stands, at the base of the moment in the rigid geometry of civic power. One beam of light catches the edge of a frozen microphone grille.
