Tangled Cables on Beijing City Hall Podium Before Dawn
Soft overcast light washes the scene beneath the massive floodlights of a government building near Qianmen in Beijing. A sturdy wooden podium stands in the foreground, its surface marked by the scuff of use. Thick black microphone cables coil messily across the top and drape down the sides, creating a chaotic tangle against the polished wood. Behind the speaker's stand, barriers are plastered with wet posters that cling heavily to the metal, their edges curling from the damp air. The season shift shows in the gray, still sky and the cool sheen on the pavement. Layers of depth recede into the distance where the faint outline of the building's architecture fades into the predawn gray. A frayed end of a red cable rests on the wet pavement near the base of the stand.
