Copper-toned light falls across the stone pavement of a public square in Raqqa as winter wind stirs paper leaflets across the ground. A speaker stands center frame, positioned directly between the heavy, weathered columns of a courthouse. The stone surfaces display deep gray and ochre tones, textured by age and exposure. Around the speaker, a crowd holds up smartphones, their screens glowing faintly against the dimming sky. The columns rise high, their capitals carved with simple geometric patterns, resting on the ground level. At the edge, a single leaflet catches against the base of a column, its edges frayed by the wind.
