Preparing Pastries in Auckland

Sunlight spills across the corrugated iron roof of a Ponsonby café, catching the steam rising from a stack of ceramic mugs on a stainless steel prep counter. A baker in a flour-dusted apron slides a heavy baking sheet from the oven, the metal clanging softly against the counter’s edge. Nearby, a towel edge drapes over a rail, damp and striped, while a muffin tin rests beside a half-empty biscuit tin, its contents long gone. Outside, the street is quiet, with rolling carts parked outside neighboring shops, their wheels still and silent.
