Chameleon Strikes Cricket at Manila Roadside Stop
by Kay Nielsen
Vapor curls from the nostrils of a green chameleon perched on a weathered wooden post near Poblacion. The lizard extends its projectile tongue with violent precision toward a trembling cricket resting on a damp metal railing. Reflected light from a nearby puddle washes the scene in cool, shimmering highlights, contrasting against the warm orange glow of a distant streetlamp. The turn of seasons leaves the roadside vegetation sparse, with dry leaves scattered across the cracked asphalt. The chameleon's skin texture is rough and granular, displaying intricate patterns of olive and rust. Its eyes rotate independently, locking onto the prey with unblinking focus. The tongue, a pale pink blur of motion, bridges the gap between predator and insect just inches from the wet pavement.
