Chameleon Catching Cricket in Kuala Lumpur Lane

by Samantha Thompson

Deep blue twilight settles over a narrow village lane in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur. A chameleon perches on a damp wooden fence post, its skin shifting from moss green to earthy brown. Behind it, the humid air hangs heavy with recent rain, glistening on the rough bark. A bright cricket lands on the railing just inches away. The reptile's eye swivels, locking onto the prey. Suddenly, a long, sticky tongue shoots forward in a blur of motion, striking the insect. The blue hour light carves a thin silver rim along the chameleon's spine and the edge of the fence, separating the subject from the dark, shadowed background of the street. The final moment shows the tongue fully extended, the cricket suspended in mid-air against the deepening shadows of the lane.
