Platypus Diving Through San Diego Kelp Forest

by Emma Patterson

Emerald green light falls through the water, fractured by dancing ripples on the surface above. A platypus glides forward, its sleek brown fur trailing behind the streamlined body. The animal moves through a dense forest of tall kelp fronds that sway gently in the current. Sunlight pierces the water column in shifting beams, illuminating particles suspended in the exceptionally clear fluid. The fronds create vertical lines of dark green and translucent brown against the bright background. The platypus's webbed feet propel it silently through the aquatic corridor. A final beam of light catches the curve of its tail, highlighting the fine texture of its coat against the deep blue stillness.
