Pink Salt Lake Downward Steam Morning Rain in along a wave-cut shoreline near Guangzhou

Pink Salt Lake Downward Steam Morning Rain

by Kane Herman

Thick white crusts fracture across the surface of a pink-hued salt lake, meeting a wave-cut shoreline where the ground meets the water. The early morning sky hangs heavy and gray, pressing down on the landscape with a damp, rainy weight. From the water's edge, plumes of steam do not rise but pour downward like heavy, viscous liquid, pooling instantly onto the white salt flats. The pink water reflects the dull, overcast light, creating a seamless blend of mineral white and saturated rose. Along the distant horizon, faint outlines of Guangzhou's urban structures blur into the mist, at the base of the impossible flow of the falling vapor in a specific, recognizable geography. The steam creates a solid-looking curtain that drapes over the foreground rocks, its texture smooth and wet.
