Steam Rising from Manhole Cover on Wet Lanzhou Street in outside a corner cafe in Lanzhou

Steam Rising from Manhole Cover on Wet Lanzhou Street

by Cheyenne Villa

Steam billows upward from a circular iron manhole cover set into a rain-slicked crosswalk near a corner cafe in Lanzhou. Early spring light reflects sharply off the wet shopfront glass, casting elongated streaks of white and gray across the dark pavement. The asphalt glistens with pooled water, mirroring the muted sky above. A Dutch angle tilt distorts the vertical lines of the storefront, showing the urban grit. The metal grate shows signs of rust and wear, against the smooth, oily sheen of the wet road. Puddles gather around the vent, distorting the reflection of the nearby building facade. at the edge is a thin ribbon of steam curling into the cool air before vanishing against the glass.
