Pearl Diver Portrait Beside Nanjing Harbor Wall

Water ripples against the rough concrete of a Nanjing harbor wall, casting shifting patterns of silver light onto the subject's face. The diver stands at eye level, hair plastered dark and wet against the forehead, strands whipping sharply in the midday breeze. Sun-chapped lips part slightly, their texture rough and dry against the glistening moisture of the skin. Early autumn air does not cool the heat of the reflected sunlight, which highlights the salt crust on the collarbone and the deep lines etched around the eyes. The wind tugs at the loose strands of hair, creating a dynamic tension against the stillness of the stone behind. One droplet of water slides from the earlobe, tracing a clear path down the neck before disappearing into the shadows of the shoulder.
