Inverted Swimmer at Holguin Quay After Storm in at a harbor quay near Holguin

Inverted Swimmer at Holguin Quay After Storm

by Ravi Heath

Rain-slicked harbor water reflects the first electric glow of city lights against the darkening sky near Holguin. A synchronized swimmer hangs inverted in the water, legs thrust vertically above the surface, creating a sharp splash of droplets suspended in mid-air. Deep shadow covers the swimmer's body, while a bright rim of light traces the curve of the legs and the wet skin, separating the figure from the murky background. The water churns with white foam from the recent storm, mixing with the stillness of the evening. Wooden pilings of the quay stand dark and wet nearby, their surfaces glistening under the dim ambient light. One droplet rolls off the swimmer's thigh, catching the faint reflection of a distant streetlamp before vanishing into the dark water.
