Ice Halo and Parhelic Circle Over Russian Winter
by Maxine Craft
Rich amber sunset light spills across a frozen Russian landscape, illuminating a brilliant ice halo and a horizontal parhelic circle against heavy overcast skies. Fast-moving cloud bands streak horizontally above the horizon, their undersides catching the low sun's glow. The sky transitions from deep orange near the sun to slate gray where the clouds thicken. Below, a vast expanse of snow stretches into the distance, its surface textured by wind and marked by faint tracks. The ice crystals suspended in the air refract the light, creating sharp, luminous rings that contrast with the soft, diffuse clouds. A faint shadow of a distant tree line breaks the flat horizon, at the base of the celestial display in the quiet stillness of the dead of winter. The edge of the parhelic circle rests precisely on the horizon line.
