Ottoman Bathhouse Ruin in Oklahoma Dusk

by Nancy Gill

Copper-toned light washes over the skeletal remains of a domed structure in an Oklahoma field. Broken ceramic tiles cascade from the crumbling vaulted ceiling, their curved edges catching the fading sun. Dust motes drift through vertical shafts of backlight that pierce the open roof, illuminating the texture of weathered stone and crumbling plaster. The scene is framed by a weathered wooden beam in the foreground, creating a natural window into the interior. Late spring grass grows thick around the base of the walls, softening the harsh geometry of the ruin. Shadows stretch long across the uneven floor, showing the depth of the collapsed dome.
