Noon glare over Tasmanian rice terrace ridges in from a ridge above layered foothills in Tasmania

Noon glare over Tasmanian rice terrace ridges

by Camilla Mooney

Flat, harsh noon light bleaches the color from stepped rice terraces carved into rolling foothills. White clouds hang low, pooling as ground fog in the depressions between the ridges, leaving the highest contours sharp and sun-drenched. The geometric lines of the paddies create a rhythmic grid that follows the land's natural slope, stretching from the immediate foreground deep into the hazy distance. Pale green stalks stand stiff against the glare, their surfaces reflecting the intense overhead sun. Shadows remain short and dark directly beneath the ridges, showing the vertical drop of each step. A thin layer of mist rests on the valley floor, obscuring the base of the hills while the upper ridges remain starkly defined against the bright sky.
