Narrowboat Tunnel Passage Predawn Australia in on a wind-open causeway in Australia

Narrowboat Tunnel Passage Predawn Australia

by Noelle Humphrey

Rain slicks the black hull of a narrowboat as it moves into the shadowed mouth of a red brick canal tunnel. The predawn sky offers only faint starlight and a soft ground glow, illuminating the wet stone archway above. Droplets streak across the water's surface, rippling around the boat's stern where a faint reflection shimmers. The brickwork shows rough textures of age and dampness, against the smooth, dark water. Wind ripples the surface of the causeway beside the canal, catching the dim light. One lantern on the boat casts a small pool of warm yellow light against the cool blue-grey tones of the early morning. The rear of the vessel cuts through the drizzle, leaving a trail of disturbed water that slowly settles back into the dark channel.
