Deep brown water churns violently around the massive concrete base of a viaduct pier, creating tight eddies that drag debris against the wet stone. The scene sits under a steel and concrete overpass structure in Burundi during the dry season, where the sky has just cleared to a deep twilight blue. Utility lights mounted on the bridge cast a cool, artificial glow that reflects off the turbulent surface and the slick vertical faces of the concrete. Fine dust coats the dry earth in the immediate foreground, against the churning mud. A small plastic bottle caught in the foam rests against the rough texture of the pier, marking the exact moment the floodwaters recede.
