Mountain Lion on Mirror Water Ledge at Twilight in beside a tidal inlet in Yunnan

Mountain Lion on Mirror Water Ledge at Twilight

by Susan Reese

Steel-blue ambient light floods the rocky ledge beside a tidal inlet in early autumn. A mountain lion crouches in patient stillness, wind whipping the thick fur along its spine into a textured ribbon of tawny and gray. Below the paws, the solid stone floor transforms seamlessly into mirror-still open water. This impossible surface reflects the cat's underside, the jagged cliff edge, and the deepening sky with perfect symmetry. The tidal inlet stretches into the distance, its surface unbroken by ripples. One claw grips the horizon line where stone meets water, anchoring the reflection to the physical rock. The low angle frames the predator's height against the vast, inverted world beneath, with at the edge showing the sharp edge of a whisker against the dark, glassy water.
