Monks Blowing Long Horns at Ngaoundere Losar Ceremony

by Brittany Riley

Flat noon light flattens the shadows across the dusty courtyard where monks stand in a tight cluster. The cool season air shimmers with a visible heat haze that distorts the background buildings slightly. From behind, the figures appear as dark silhouettes against the bright, washed-out sky. Thick, curved long horns rest in their hands, their surfaces gleaming with polished brass or copper tones. The monks wear deep maroon robes that drape heavily over their shoulders, against the pale, sun-bleached earth beneath their feet. Dust motes hang suspended in the vertical beams of light, caught in the stillness of the moment. The curved bell of a horn points upward, catching a sharp glint of white light at its rim.
