Monkey Puzzle Tree Silhouette on Tunis Cliff
by Ava Benitez
Hard late-afternoon sunlight flattens the rugged texture of a monkey puzzle tree into a stark black silhouette against the bright sky. The tree stands at the edge of a salt-sprayed cliff near Tunis, its prehistoric, angular branches reaching out like skeletal fingers. A brief winter sun shower creates a hazy, shimmering veil over the scene, where individual raindrops catch the glare and turn into tiny suspended diamonds. The ground below is rough and dry, covered in low, winter-hardened scrub that resists the coastal wind. Dark, wet rocks line the cliff edge, glistening with moisture. The sky remains a pale, washed-out blue, offering no warmth to the cold, sharp lines of the conifer. A final drop of water slides down a thick, diamond-patterned branch, leaving a dark streak on the bark.
