Mist Rising from Winter Hot Spring Shoreline in along a wave-cut shoreline in Kazakhstan

Mist Rising from Winter Hot Spring Shoreline

by Evan Black

Soft overcast light washes the wave-cut shoreline of Kazakhstan at nautical dawn, turning the rising steam into a pale, ghostly veil. Thick plumes of mist curl upward from the hot spring water, whipped horizontally by a strong wind that scours the wet rocks. The water surface churns with white foam where waves meet the shore, against the still, dark silhouette of the steam columns against the brightening gray sky. Wet stones glisten with a slick sheen, their rough textures softened by the constant spray of the monsoon season. The wind carves the mist into streaks that stretch across the frame, showing isolation where the horizon blurs into the sky. A final wisp of vapor drifts low over a jagged stone, disappearing into the gray expanse.
