Mesa Cliff Dwellings Floodplain Reflection
by Janet Young
Red sandstone cliffs rise abruptly from a wet floodplain, their surfaces carved with rectangular alcoves housing ancient stone structures. The dry season leaves the mesa top bare and dusty while the valley floor glistens with shallow rainwater. Heat haze shimmers above the ground, blurring the horizon line where the mesa meets the pale blue sky. A broad sheet of standing water in the foreground acts as a mirror, flipping the rugged cliff face and its dark recesses into a perfect inverted duplicate. The light is bright and direct, casting sharp shadows inside the hollowed-out rooms while illuminating the rough texture of the weathered rock. The reflection extends across the entire lower half of the view, doubling the scale of the geologic formation against the clear atmosphere. The edge of the water line cuts a straight, dark boundary against the sandy mud.
