Late Morning Adobe Pueblo After Rain in in United States

Late Morning Adobe Pueblo After Rain

by Fred Bryant

Soft, diffused light washes over the terraced adobe walls of a sprawling pueblo dwelling under a late summer sky. Rain has just ceased, leaving the earth-toned stucco surfaces damp and darkened, with water trickling slowly down the stepped facades. The air shimmers with a visible heat haze rising from the dry ground, distorting the horizon line where the structure meets the distant desert scrub. Wide panoramic framing reveals the complex geometry of the multi-story homes, their flat roofs lined with wooden vigas. Puddles reflect the pale sky in the narrow courtyards, while the rough texture of the clay plaster catches the moisture. One shadow stretches across the lower level, defined by the sharp edge of a protruding beam against the softened ground.
