Taos Pueblo Adobe Under Sandstone Cliff After Rain

by Maria Christensen

Red clay walls rise in perfect symmetry beneath a massive sandstone overhang near Taos. Early spring softens the earth tones while heat haze shimmers above the adobe surface. Rain has left the stucco dark and heavy, against the pale gray sky. Flat roofs hold shallow pools of water that reflect the cliff face. Wooden vigas protrude from the walls, their rough grain visible against the smoothed mud. Dust settles on the lower steps where the ground meets the structure. The composition balances the heavy rock above with the human scale of the dwelling below. A faint ripple in a puddle distorts the reflection of the cliff edge.
