Melting Poplar Windbreak Over Cabbage Rows
Golden hour light silhouettes a line of poplar trees bordering freshly irrigated cabbage rows in a Zambian field. The sky hangs heavy with overcast clouds, yet the sun breaks through just enough to cast the trees as dark, sharp outlines. The rigid trunks of the poplars defy physics, their lower sections softening into thick, viscous wax that drips downward. This molten material pools at the base of each tree, merging with the wet, dark soil of the furrows. The cabbage heads sit in neat, geometric rows, their pale green leaves against the blackened, flowing wood. Dust motes are absent, but the texture of the melting wood appears smooth and glossy against the rough, tilled earth. The scene recedes in layers, with the melting trees growing smaller and more indistinct toward the horizon, showing depth that feels both urgent and still.
