Melting Neon Sign in Strathcona Alley in under an elevated train line in Strathcona, Vancouver

Melting Neon Sign in Strathcona Alley

by Sheila Ortiz

Deep indigo shadows pool beneath an elevated train structure in a Strathcona back alley, where wet pavement reflects faint ground glow and distant starlight. A rusted metal fire escape hangs above, its ladder rungs dripping condensation that pools on the concrete. To the right, a rigid neon sign box defies physics, its edges softening into a viscous, amber wax-like substance that drips downward. This liquid metal accumulates in a glossy puddle on the wet asphalt, mirroring the fractured blue light of the sign above. Wind funnels dry maple leaves and crumpled paper along the curb, pushing debris against the melting base. The wet street surface stretches toward the dark tunnel of the tracks, creating a stark contrast between the cold, hard infrastructure and the fluid anomaly in the foreground.
