Korean Hanok Tiled Roof in Kaduna Stair Hall

by Dustin Stewart

Bright late-afternoon sunlight floods a tiled stair hall in Kaduna, illuminating the curved, dark grey roof tiles of a Korean hanok house placed within the space. The traditional sweeping eaves contrast sharply with the angular, light-colored concrete steps and walls of the Nigerian building. Dramatic, heavy clouds fill the open area above, casting shifting shadows across the textured ceramic tiles. The turn of seasons is visible in the soft, diffused quality of the daylight and the muted tones of the surrounding masonry. A deep shadow falls beneath the overhanging roof edge, resting on the second stair tread.
