Korean Hanok Roof in Kuşadası Skylit Passage

by Karla Woods

Deep indigo shadows fill the narrow skylit passageway in Kuşadası, where droplets of early summer rain streak the glass ceiling above. A traditional Korean hanok structure with its distinctive upturned tile roof edges stands in silhouette against the dimming sky. Thin rim light traces the curved eaves, separating the dark silhouette from the cool blue ambient glow of the blue hour. Rain beads slide down the transparent roof panels, catching faint highlights from the twilight. The tiled surface appears smooth and weathered, its dark curves against the wet, reflective floor below. Warm, subtle tones from interior lighting spill outward from beneath the roof, creating a cozy pocket of amber against the encroaching evening blue. The upturned corners of the roof frame a small patch of fading sky, at the base of the architectural detail in the drizzling atmosphere.
