Circular Hakka Earthen House Interior Hall in inside a tiled stair hall in Harbin

Circular Hakka Earthen House Interior Hall

by Floyd Strong

Thick, textured earthen walls curve inward to form a perfect circular staircase hall. The floor consists of worn, gray tiles reflecting the harsh, flat noon light flooding from above. Dramatic, heavy monsoon clouds press against the open sky visible at the top of the structure, casting shifting, high-contrast shadows across the curved surfaces. The converging lines of the stairs guide toward a distant vanishing point at the center of the dome. Dust motes float in the bright shafts of light, illuminating the rough, matte finish of the mud-brick construction. A deep shadow pools at the base of the steps where the light fails to reach the floor tiles.
