King Protea Blooms Blue Whale Shadow Rain
by Otto Jenkins
Steady rain sheets down on a silver protea bush clinging to a salt-sprayed cliff edge near Delhi. Late spring light strikes the wet petals just after sunrise, turning water droplets into scattered diamonds against the dusty stone. The heavy blooms stand rigid in the downpour, their textures softened by the constant moisture. Above the vegetation, a massive blue whale glides through the gray sky, its form rendered with the weight of physical matter. The creature casts a distinct, dark shadow that stretches across the cliff face and pools over the wet protea stems. The shadow moves in perfect sync with the whale's position, at the base of the impossible sight in the harsh reality of the storm. One raindrop slides down the edge of a large, silver petal, reflecting the blue of the whale's flank.
