Blue Whale Shadow Over Wild Iris Stamen in along a salt-sprayed cliff edge near Irbid

Blue Whale Shadow Over Wild Iris Stamen

by Laura Villarreal

Copper-toned light bathes a pollen-dusted stamen of a wild iris standing on a salt-sprayed cliff edge. The flower's orange anthers glow against a soft, blurred background of late autumn vegetation. Above the plant, a massive blue whale drifts through the air, its smooth, grey-blue skin reflecting the low-angle sun. The whale casts a distinct, elongated shadow that falls across the iris petals and the rocky ground below. The scale is impossible, yet the lighting remains consistent, at the base of the giant creature in the same atmospheric haze as the tiny flower. Salt crystals sparkle on the cliff stones near the base of the stem. The whale's fin cuts a sharp line against the fading sky.
