Spiraling Lighthouse Stairwell Amidst Salt and Guano Ruins

by Tatiana West

Soft, diffused light from a clear late-afternoon sky illuminates a crumbling concrete stairwell spiraling downward. Thick layers of white guano and crystalline salt crust the steps and railings, creating a textured, jagged surface that contrasts with the smooth, ivy-draped masonry wall on the left. The rainy season has left the surrounding vegetation lush and deep green, clinging to the decaying structure. Leading lines of the spiral draw toward the dark, hollow center of the tower. Dust motes are not visible, but the air appears still. at the edge is a single crack running through a salt-encrusted step edge.
