Horizontal Tree Kayak Foggy Harbor Cuba in beside a fogbound harbor mouth in Cuba

Horizontal Tree Kayak Foggy Harbor Cuba

by Athena Shepherd

Steel-blue evening light washes the open water beside a Cuban harbor mouth, where a fishing kayak floats motionless. The surface acts as a perfect mirror, doubling the vessel and the sky above. A massive, fully leafed tree erupts horizontally from a concrete seawall, its roots buried in the masonry and branches stretching out over the water. The tree looks healthy and organic, against the hard gray stone. The sky remains perfectly clear despite the thick fog rolling in from the channel. Moss rests on the damp concrete near the waterline, while the kayak's hull reflects the impossible green canopy. The horizontal branch dips low, nearly touching the mirrored surface of the sea.
