Hoarfrost on Barbed Wire at Bulgarian Dawn
by Wade Poole
Pale golden sunlight strikes the jagged teeth of a barbed wire fence, illuminating a thick crust of white hoarfrost that clings to every twist of the metal. The wire stretches horizontally across the lower third of the view, creating a sharp, textured foreground against a sky filled with stacked, dark grey thunderheads. Late spring air carries a faint mist that settles on the cold steel, turning the sharp points into soft, crystalline spikes. Below the fence, the ground is a muted mix of dormant grass and emerging green shoots. The distant horizon shows the heavy, layered clouds typical of a Bulgarian spring morning, their undersides glowing with the first light of sunrise. The frost glistens where the sun hits it, while the shadows between the wire strands remain deep and cool blue. A small patch of red rust on a post anchor provides a stark contrast to the white ice.
