Haitian Ruin Crypt Door Open Amid Thyme in inside a roofless nave in Haiti

Haitian Ruin Crypt Door Open Amid Thyme

by Judith Sutton

Late afternoon sun cuts through the open roof of a stone nave in Haiti, striking dust motes suspended in humid air. A weathered wooden door hangs slightly ajar on a crypt entrance, framed by a rough stone archway above. Wild thyme carpets the uneven floor, tiny purple blooms resting against gray rubble. Bees hover near the threshold, their yellow and black stripes sharp against the dark interior shadow. Recent rain leaves surfaces glistening with moisture, while moss rests on the base of the walls. Fractured columns stand beside the entrance, and vines creep over the threshold where the door meets the stone floor.
