Haitian Gede Ceremony in Zonguldak Hall

by Sean Lowery

Indigo twilight floods the prayer hall interior, casting a deep blue hue across the stone floor where figures in traditional Haitian Baron Samedi costumes stand. Black suits with white skull face paint contrast sharply against the dim, water-reflected light filtering through the space. Low-hanging clouds obscure the sky outside, visible only as a dark band beyond the windows. The heavy fabric of the top hats rests stiffly on heads, while silver jewelry catches faint glimmers from the wet exterior. One row of wooden pews lines the right wall, their dark grain visible under the gloom. The faces of the participants remain fixed in solemn masks, their eyes staring straight ahead as shadows stretch long across the wet pavement outside the open doors.
