Predawn Yam Ceremony at Jabalpur Waterfront

by Tessa Holden

Cold moonlight spills over the wet stone embankment where figures stand in disciplined rows along the Jabalpur waterfront. The predawn darkness wraps the scene in deep indigo, broken only by the pale silver glow reflecting off the humid, rain-soaked ground. Participants wear heavy cotton wraps and traditional indigo-dyed cloths, their faces illuminated by the stark, cool light as they hold polished yams with steady, upright postures. Water droplets rest on the rough bark of nearby trees and glisten on the dark river surface. The air appears thick and still, visible as a faint haze hovering just above the rippling water. One yam rests on a woven palm mat, its pale skin catching the moonlight while the shadow of a nearby pillar falls sharply across the wet stones.
