Haitian Vodou Ceremony in Tainan Courtyard

Heavy monsoon clouds stack low over a temple courtyard in Tainan, casting shifting patches of grey light across the scene. A group of dancers moves in a tight circle, their bodies captured mid-motion as drummers strike instruments in the center. The courtyard floor is wet and slick, reflecting the pale sky and the dark silhouettes of the participants. Drums made of wood and skin sit on low stands, surrounded by offerings of fruit and candles arranged on the stone ground. The dancers wear vibrant fabrics that stand out against the muted, overcast tones of the architecture. Water droplets bead on the surface of the drums, and the edges of the clothing blur slightly with the rhythm of movement. One red candle flickers near the base of a stone pillar, its flame steady against the damp air.
