Ceremonial Parasol at Conakry New Year Dusk
by Linda Clarke
Wet cobblestones reflect the fading twilight sky, creating a mirror surface that doubles the vibrant colors of a ceremonial parasol held high in a Conakry street procession. The parasol's fabric, heavy with recent rain, shows intricate embroidery and gold thread catching the low, humid light. Water droplets rest on the carved wooden handle and the stiffened ribs of the canopy. Beside the central figure, other participants wear traditional indigo and white garments, their textures softened by the damp air. A stone archway frames the scene, casting deep shadows that contrast with the bright, wet pavement. The raw authenticity of the moment is visible in the glistening fabric folds and the way the rain-slicked ground amplifies the warm glow of nearby lanterns. one drop of water slides down the edge of the canopy, catching the last light before falling.
