Kandahar Subway Stair Graffiti Winter Predawn

by Lee Harding

Concrete steps ascend in a sharp Dutch angle tilt, their surfaces scarred by layers of peeling paint and weathered graffiti. The predawn darkness wraps the scene, broken only by the faint blue glow of starlight and a soft, dirty ground light spilling from a nearby fluorescent convenience store. Steam rises steadily from a metal grate, curling into the cold winter air where small patches of frost rest on the gritty edges. Scattered debris and a single plastic bottle rest against the rough wall, marking the spot with small evidence of life. The wet pavement reflects the distant store lights, creating streaks of neon orange and blue across the dark concrete. A final shadow falls sharply along the stair's edge, at the base of the tension in the cold, damp air.
