Glass Furnace Tender Floating After Storm
by Joshua Nixon
Molten orange light skims the weathered skin of a glass furnace tender in Mostaganem, casting deep shadows across furrowed cheeks and a soot-stained cap. The subject stands in negative space, framed by the cool blue tones of a clearing autumn sky just after sunrise. A sudden failure of gravity lifts a heavy iron ladle and a ceramic crucible into midair beside the worker's shoulder, their surfaces reflecting the intense internal heat of the furnace. Water droplets from the recent storm hang suspended in the air, catching the sidelight like tiny diamonds. The tender's eyes reflect the glowing melt, creating a focal point of quiet intensity against the impossible suspension of heavy industrial tools. One rivulet of sweat traces a path down the temple, defying the floating objects nearby.
