Bronze Pourer Floating Above Canal
by Omar Benitez
A foundry worker stands suspended in midair beside a Guangzhou canal, pouring molten bronze that flows upward into a sand mold hovering inches above the water. The late afternoon light, filtered through the cool season rain, reflects off the liquid metal and the wet brick embankment. Heavy tools float in a loose cluster near the worker's waist, defying gravity while casting sharp shadows on the canal surface below. The water ripples gently around the floating sand mold, its texture rough and gray against the glowing orange of the metal. Steam rises in a tight column from the molten stream, curling into the humid air before dissipating. The worker's boots hover just above the stone edge, creating a stark visual separation from the grounded city architecture lining the opposite bank. One droplet of bronze hangs motionless between the ladle and the mold, suspended in the impossible stillness of the moment.
