Welding Mask and Gloves in Predawn Machine Shop
by Lars Sampson
A heavy black welding mask rests on a scratched steel workbench beside a pair of scorched leather gloves, their surfaces stained with orange soot. String lights hang overhead, casting a warm, uneven glow that highlights the dust motes suspended in the predawn air. The rough texture of the leather contrasts with the smooth, dark plastic of the mask, while the background reveals the shadowy outlines of industrial machinery and concrete walls typical of a Tangier workshop. Late autumn light falls through high windows, mixing with the artificial illumination to create deep shadows that stretch across the floor. The low angle emphasizes the utilitarian mass of the equipment, at the base of the scene in clear quiet, functional stillness before the day begins. A faint reflection of the string lights shimmers on the curved visor of the mask.
