Geologist Washing Garnet Sand at Nautical Dawn

by Kelly Beck

Soft gray light from nautical dawn fills the misty air above a muddy riverbank near Yangon. A geologist crouches beside wet, black basalt rocks, hands submerged in a shallow pan swirling with water and reddish garnet sand. The diffused morning glow bleaches the sky into pale gray, revealing the texture of the damp stones and the granular flow of the sediment inside the pan. Dark volcanic rocks rest on the bank, anchoring the figure against the vast, empty expanse of the misty morning. Water ripples gently, carrying fine grains away while heavier minerals settle at the bottom. at the edge shows a specific cluster of red garnets catching the dull light at the edge of the swirling slurry.
