Galapagos Tortoise in Maracaibo Reed Bed

by Annette Baird

Deep shadow swallows the foreground where a massive Galápagos giant tortoise moves slowly across jagged volcanic rock. A sharp rim light cuts through the evening haze, outlining the tortoise's dark, textured carapace and the rough scales of its thick legs. Fine sea spray hangs in the air, catching the first glow of distant city lights that begin to pierce the twilight. Tall reeds fringe the edge of the wetland, their dry stalks standing motionless against the encroaching darkness. The low angle emphasizes the creature's slow, deliberate stride over the uneven stones. Tiny droplets of moisture rest on the rock surface, reflecting the faint orange glow of the urban horizon.
