Tortoise Walks Across Italian Rocky Slope

Golden late afternoon light falls across a rugged, sun-baked slope in the Italian mountains. A Galápagos giant tortoise moves slowly over loose stones and dry earth. Its dark gray, deeply textured shell reflects the clear sky above. Sparse shrubs rest on the rocky terrain behind the animal. Dry autumn leaves skitter across the foreground, caught in sudden gusts of wind that rustle the low vegetation. The tortoise's thick, scaly legs grip the uneven ground with deliberate slowness. Dust settles instantly in the clear air. One dry leaf rests on the highest point of the carapace, trembling slightly against the wind.
