Deep shadows dominate the ground beneath a towering crane in Hebei, where steel nail coils and marked wall plates rest on wooden sawhorses. Early winter frost coats the dust scattered across the open site, while a sharp rim of pale dawn light traces the curved edges of the metal. Storm clouds are clearing in the background, allowing faint illumination to fall across the rough timber surfaces. Converging lines of the sawhorses stretch toward a distant vanishing point, guiding the view through the quiet, weather-tested work area. A coil of nails sits beside a cut-off bin, its cold steel edge catching the first hint of morning glow against the dark earth.
