Fractal River Delta in Misty Chubu Shoreline Mud

by Glen Barrera

Late spring sunlight fades over a wave-cut shoreline in Chubu, leaving the mud flats in deep shadow. Thick mist rolls across the drying surface, softening the edges of a complex fractal river delta. The dried mud splits into intricate, branching channels that resemble a map of frozen veins. Earth tones range from dark, wet charcoal near the water line to pale, cracked beige in the higher, drier sections. The low angle of the setting sun casts long, faint shadows within the crevices, showing the depth of the erosion. Mist rests on the lowest depressions, creating a hazy veil that separates the foreground texture from the distant, indistinct horizon. The final crack in the mud reveals a thin line of darker, damp earth beneath the dry crust.
