Fractured Mud Cracks in Manitoba Dawn Fog

by Jeff Lucero

Pale gray light spills across a cracked riverbed in Manitoba, illuminating the geometric network of dried mud. The earth splits into irregular polygons, their edges sharp against the soft, silver haze hovering just above the surface. Fine dust settles in the crevices, catching the cool dawn glow while the surrounding landscape fades into a uniform white fog. The texture of the soil appears rough and brittle, against the smooth, ethereal mist that obscures the horizon. Darker lines of shadow deepen within the fissures, showing the depth of the desiccation. One crack runs diagonally toward the bottom right corner, leading the eye into the endless pattern of the dry earth.
