Fossil Layers in Golden Mist Near Boudhanath

by Carmen Montes

Thick winter mist clings to a rugged cliff face, softening the sharp edges of sedimentary rock. The last light of day casts a warm, amber glow across the horizontal bands of stone, highlighting textures where ancient marine fossils are embedded in the layers. These pale, curved shapes stand out against the darker, rougher matrix of the cliff. The stone surface appears weathered and damp, with deep grooves running vertically between the strata. The mist diffuses the light, creating a soft halo around the rock formations without obscuring the geological details. A small patch of dry, brown grass clings to a narrow ledge near the bottom right corner. The fossilized shell of a bivalve rests clearly within a distinct layer, its white curve catching the fading sun.
