Stone Hermitage Cliff Boudhanath Spring Dusk

by Sam Walsh

Sodium-vapor orange washes the weathered stone walls of a small hermitage perched precariously on a steep cliff edge near Boudhanath. Early spring mist clings low to the gorge, softening the jagged rock face while distant city lights begin to flicker on in the valley below. The hermitage windows glow with a warm, steady firelight that contrasts against the cooling blue of the overcast sky. Below, a dark, still pool of water mirrors the structure perfectly, doubling the glowing windows and the rough texture of the masonry. Thick, low-hanging clouds obscure the upper cliff, showing enclosure around the solitary building. The reflection in the water remains sharp, showing the precise geometry of the stone archway and the flickering light within.
